The Challenge

Do you want to have the time of your life, riding across our country with hundreds of fellow American Legion Riders while raising thousands of dollars for a worthy cause?  Do you want to ride your motorcycle and do something challenging, demanding, and FUN, while supporting a major program of The American Legion?

What is The Legacy Run?

Quoting from the American Legion Legacy Fund web site: "As an unfortunate consequence of Operation Iraqi Freedom and the global war on terror, many children of our active-duty military personnel are now members of single-parent families.  We are raising funds to ensure that higher education will be a reality for these families..."

Check out the Legacy Fund web site for the answers to Frequently Asked Questions about the Fund and how it is used to provide an education for these worthy children.

Where do we ride?

The Legacy Run kicks off each August from a Post in Indianapolis, the National Headquarters of the American Legion.  We then ride with approximately 350 other Legion Riders with strict discipline and demanding timelines on a ride of approximately five days.  The mileage varies, but the actual Legacy Run route is usually about 1,500 to 2,000 miles.  When you add on the mileage to/from Indianapolis, we usually ride between 3,500 to 5,000 miles, depending on the destination.

The "destination" is wherever the American Legion National Convention is being held.  Here are some of the previous Legacy Runs:

2010: Indianapolis to Milwaukee (via the Midwest)  video ( of the last day)  and here (arrival in Higginsville, MO)

2009: Indianapolis to Louisville (via OH, PA, WV, and VA)  video

2008: Indianapolis to Phoenix (via old Route 66)  video

2007: Indianapolis to Reno, Nevada   video with introduction by National Commander

2006: Indianapolis to Salt Lake City   video

For 2011, the Legacy Run will take place from Aug 21 - 26, and the ALR will ride from Indianapolis to Minneapolis, MN.  The actual route is still being planned.

Generally, riders from American Legion Post 177 link up with other ALR members in Virginia and make the 2-day trip to Indianapolis, arriving on Friday or Saturday before the departure.  One of the many fun things about the Legacy Run is the opportunity to meet and bond with other ALR riders from your state.  Virginia is usually well-represented and we are proud to say that Virginia riders are one of the largest and most involved groups in the ride!

How can you help?  Help raise money. Our Post makes a donation each year, and we do it through things like food sales and raffles.  Corporate sponsors are welcome.  Better yet, JOIN US on the ride!

Email any of our officers for more information.  You'll never regret going and it will be one of the most rewarding rides you've ever made.  It is why the same riders return year after year, and our numbers keep growing.

Check out the pictures we've added below from the 2011 Legacy Run.  It was an awesome event and we raised over $600,000 for the Legacy Scholarship Fund.  Thank you!!
